Try not to be scared

Scorpio Cat Woman

      (“Try not to be scared”)

I scratched the back of his neck

and it marked the beginning

of the end. Seven months later,

in another season entirely, a scorpion

pierced my left heel. I could not breath

for the pain. I vomited for two days–

spit up mango bits and my old

weaknesses. Walked jagged lines, aimed for my mouth,

and struck my nose. My blood spilled

with the descent of rain, leaving grizzly

And in the downfall,

I was dispossessed of shame, that comfortable

skin, and pulled on black boots.

It is well with my soul.

I scratch now with fewer apologies,

talk less, sing more, sting

at times. Try not to be scared– these are love

bites. The deluge has cleaned me of my

delusions and imparted big sky

medicine, the kind you have to can your

neck back to fully swallow.

The best kind. My super powers include

night-time vision and clicking my

heels in dance, especially in the eye

of a storm.
