I wonder as I wander.. a healing poem and dance collage for you.

As a poet, physician, and dancer, I care very much about the the meeting place of art and healing, and more specifically, how dance and poetry can serve as powerful medicine.

This specific piece explores the following questions: Where is our home and what keeps stirring our want to wander? What are we all searching for? What can we do to help one another build a home?

Here is the poem I wrote from which the dance is crafted:

I wonder as I wander and that is why
I wander.

This hunger for awe
everywhere.

The illusion of escape helps you pack your bags
quickly. We take to the road with an old soul knowing
that all is one and the craving to experience that,
and then to return home like prodigal sons,
with ragged baggages of experience, scars
of appreciation
everywhere.

Where is home?
My mother’s stews, a state of mind, your
embrace, within laughter,
everywhere.

And here is how to build home.
First understand that wandering is
home. Allow for searching, for getting lost,
for mad curiosity, allow
more.

Make space for wandering, wondering
and wonderment. These are the foundations,
how we heal our wounded minds so that we can be
at home in our bodies
everywhere.

I hope you find something in the movement and the poem that is  healing and uplifting for you.

Much love,
Tumi
